Share your passion for healthy living with our October Give Healthy Challenges

September 29, 2020

If you’ve been keeping up with our monthly Hancock Health Challenges, you’re already invested in healthier living. But there’s no reason to keep these new lifestyle changes to yourself. For the last part of the year, we’re challenging you to encourage those around you to make healthier choices, too.

We all know healthy living is easier when you have a team of like-minded family and friends by your side. Do you know anyone who could benefit from a nudge to be more active or commit to healthier eating? Be sure to share what’s made a difference for you with the ones you love.

As always, we want to see what you’re doing to live a healthier life. When you complete a Hancock Health Challenge, post a picture or video on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with the hashtag #HancockHealthChallenge.

Check out the October challenges below. Here’s to good health!

Week 1: Shop local.

As we begin to reopen and rebuild our economy, your support of local brick and mortar businesses is more important now than ever. When you shop local, the money and tax revenues from your purchase stay in our community. The old adage proves true: One person’s spending is another person’s income.

As you start to go out and make your holiday gift purchases this year, try to avoid the convenience of big, online retailers and instead support a local business you love. If you’re nervous about being exposed to COVID-19, many businesses are offering curbside pick-up for a contact-free transaction. Encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same by being a champion of the Hancock County businesses you love on social media.

Week 2: Take a hike.

In Hancock County, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful parks and trails that are perfect for people of all ages to get outside and get active. From Pennsy Trail to Beckenholdt Park, many of the best options are right here in Greenfield. Invite a friend or a family member to get outside for a socially distanced walk while you still have a chance to enjoy the vibrant fall colors. And be sure to revisit our March blog post for a ton of great ideas on where to enjoy a breath of fresh air.

Week 3: Cook with fall vegetables.

Cooking seasonally is a great way to ensure your body is getting the healthy nutrients it needs to thrive. Fall vegetables are some of the most delicious options of the year: pumpkins, cabbage, carrots, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, and kale are some of our favorite seasonal veggies. Stop by the Farmer’s Market at the Fairgrounds on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon this month to check out all of the delicious produce local farmers have to offer this season. Share your harvest with a friend and invite someone over for a hearty pot of vegetarian chili when you get home.

Week 4: Try a break from caffeine.

Do you ever have a third cup of coffee and notice that your anxiety jumps through the roof right along with your energy? Like most things, caffeine is fine in moderation. However, it’s always a good idea to take a break and reassess your relationship with caffeine. You might be surprised by how much your mood is affected by a break from coffee. Instead of inviting a friend for a cup of coffee, try a healthy juice instead. It just might turn your day around.
