Pairings with Pumpkin

October 6, 2022

It’s pumpkin season! We thought about typing that in all caps, because we know just how many pumpkin fans there are here in Hancock County. Are you dreaming of pumpkin spiced bread, lattes and more? Does your mouth water when you think about comfort foods that include this amazingly healthy and nutritious fruit? Then read on.

The great thing about pumpkin is its versatility. Not only does it shine in sweet treats, but it also pairs nicely with more savory menu items. If you are looking to up your dose of squash this fall, then make sure to add this one to your shopping list.

Pumpkins aren’t just for jack-o-lanterns

Sure, these veggies are great for carving silly or scary faces into for Halloween, but did you know that they offer some humongous health benefits to boot? Pumpkin is naturally low in calories, but high in many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can help to boost your immune system, protect your vision, lower your risk of cancer, protect your heart health, and help you to achieve healthy skin.

Make your fall extra orange

If we haven’t convinced you to eat more pumpkin this fall, maybe these recipes will. We all know about the sweeter side of this food, but incorporating it into many different types of dishes can mean more nutrient-dense pumpkin in your weekly dinner plan. Oh, but don’t worry, we have also included some fun treats for those with a sweet tooth.

Pumpkin Apple Beer Cheese Dip

Please try this one. If not for yourselves, for us. Make sure you invite your friends over, because you don’t want to be left alone with an entire recipe of this amazing dip. Serve with chips, warm bread or even soft pretzels and pair with your favorite brewsky.

Spiced Pumpkin Pudding

Not to make anyone’s grandma mad, but we’re thinking outside of the pie shell here. You may have a favorite family recipe when it comes to pumpkin pie. We aren’t trying to compete. In fact, we are just making it easier to have pumpkin pie filling any time of year! You’re welcome.

Pumpkin Ravioli with Sage, Brown Butter, and Toasted Walnuts

Have you tried the savory side of pumpkin? These little raviolis will leave you wanting more. The best part? You can use store-bought pumpkin ravioli and make this easy sauce for a simple and quick weeknight meal that tastes like it came from a bougie bistro. Pair it with a smooth white wine for extra flair.

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

Slightly more complicated than just making pumpkin cookies, yes–but would you ever say no to a giant pumpkin flavored Oreo? We thought so. This one makes a great (and nontraditional) Halloween party treat for adults and kids alike!

Pumpkin Risotto with Parmesan

It wouldn’t be a pumpkin recipe roundup without including risotto. The natural creaminess of this dish combines perfectly with pureed pumpkin. And bacon? That goes with everything.

Beef and Bean Pumpkin Stew

Want something warming on those chilly October nights? This stew can’t be beat. Not only do you get the robust flavors of slow cooked beef, but you also get the golden deliciousness that is stewed pumpkin. Serve with a crispy salad for a meal that won’t leave anyone hungry.

Hungry yet? When it comes to fall in Indiana, it’s difficult to ignore the call of pumpkin. Whether you’re more of a savory person, or your sweet tooth has a mind of its own, there’s something pumpkin out there for you. Cheers!
