Danielle Turnak, M.D., Offers a Balanced Approach to Pain Management

January 20, 2020
While many communities struggle to deal with the opioid epidemic—which often begins with pain medication for an injury or chronic health issue—Hancock Health is taking a proactive approach to a solution for East-Central Indiana.

Our recently opened Pain Management Center focuses on diagnosing and creating individualized treatment plans for patients. Treatment plans are based on a number of considerations, including the cause and level of pain. Among the staff is Danielle Turnak, M.D., one of several staff members who are board certified pain management specialists.

She’ll be providing what she describes as a “balanced care approach” to patients—not a purely medical management role. “We will tailor each care plan to fit the needs of each patient,” Dr. Turnak explained. “Each person has a different pain process and should be treated with different modalities.”

Pain conditions treated at the Hancock Pain Management Center will include neck pain, back pain, persistent pain after back or neck surgery, arthritis in spine and joints, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), radiculopathy, peripheral nerve pain, muscle spasm pain, and greater occipital neuralgia headaches.

Dr. Turnak is a native Hoosier who attended Purdue University as an undergrad. She is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and was fellowship-trained in pain medicine at the Indiana University Medical Center. When she’s not working with patients, she enjoys travel—especially to national parks—and hiking with her husband of 20 years and their two children, ages 16 and 18.

“I was very interested in internal medicine and also enjoyed my anesthesiology rotation,” Dr. Turnak said. “Pain management provides me the opportunity to have the patient contact I like while providing the medical interventions as well.” For her, practicing pain management is the best of both worlds.

Hancock Regional Hospital has partnered with Pain Mangement Group (PMG), a hospital-based pain management provider, to establish the new center. “Hancock Regional Hospital is looking forward to working with PMG to advance Pain management services for our community,” commented Craig Felty, VP and Chief Nursing and Operating Officer for Hancock Regional Hospital. “We have been blessed with several dedicated providers who have offered these services for many years to our community. Unfortunately, the demand has outpaced capacity and has necessitated the need for an increased presence. We feel that PMG is a great partner to make this happen for our community.”
