NURSE PRACTITIONER EXTERN PROGRAM
The Nurse Practitioner Extern Program at Hancock Health gives aspiring nurses real-world experience to help them excel in their field.
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are unique from other healthcare roles because they are expected to be experts in diagnosing and treating health conditions but with an added emphasis on preventative care and a patient’s holistic well-being. NPs can also prescribe medications, while registered nurses cannot.
According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, NPs must ensure “the highest quality of care, undergo rigorous certification, participate in peer reviews, and adhere to a code for ethical practices.”
NPs provide a full range of primary, acute, and specialty healthcare, including:
- Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests
- Diagnosing and treating conditions, both chronic and short-term
- Prescribing medications
- Managing patients’ overall health, including education them on preventative care
NPs often specialize in the following areas:
- Acute care
- Adult health
- Family medicine
- Geriatric care
- Neonatal care
- Oncology
- Pediatrics
- Behavioral health
- Women’s health
If you are a registered nurse considering becoming an NP, we’d encourage you to apply to our NP Extern Program.
