Having a special place to spend time outdoors is a pretty cool feeling. And if you built it yourself? Even better! Stick forts are not only pretty easy to build, they can be as big or little as you need them to be. So grab your friends and try out these easy steps to build your own shelter in your local woods!
- First, you will need to find three long sticks. At least two of them should have a “Y” shape at the end.
- Lean the sticks together to form a tripod, with the bottoms wide apart (but not so wide that your tripod collapses). The tops of the sticks should be interlocked and fairly sturdy. This is the frame of your fort. If you are having trouble getting the top to interlock and feel sturdy, have a grownup or tall friend tie some rope or twine around the three sticks at the top.
- Now, find a lot of long sticks of varying heights and thicknesses. You will use these to fill in the gaps. You may need to start with longer ones that reach the top of the tripod before filling in spaces with shorter ones.
- Once you have filled in all the spaces and you are happy with your fort, you can move in! Stumps make great seats, but you can also use an old blanket to make a soft place to sit. You can personalize your fort even more with moss, flowers, and other treasures you find in nature.
