Watching birds eat at a feeder is a great way to see them out in the open when they would otherwise be hiding up in the leaf-covered trees. Bluebirds, cardinals, blackbirds and finches are common sights at many feeders, but there are many birds that call Indiana home during the summer time. Have a grown up help you whip up this bird feeder and hang it in your yard, at a local park or forest preserve to see your feathered friends go wild!
Here is what you will need:
- One orange (or more for more bird feeders)
- Bird seed
- Peanut butter or lard
- Mixing bowl and spoon
- Yarn or twine
- Have an adult slice your orange in half. Then, scoop out the fleshy part of the fruit leaving only the peel. You can use what you scoop out as a great addition for a smoothie or your own snack!
- Holding the orange so it is a sideways bowl with the flesh facing you, poke two holes about 2 inches apart in the top.
- Thread a long piece of yarn or twine through each hole and tie it so you can hang it over the branch of a tree.
- In a mixing bowl, stir together peanut butter (or lard) and birdseed until it forms a smooth paste. Scoop it into the empty part of the orange. Now your feeder is ready to be hung on a tree branch!
