You Aren’t Alone: Resources for Substance Abuse

August 15, 2022

National Overdose Awareness Day is on August 31st. The CDC reported from January 2021 to January 2022, there were over 103,500 drug overdose deaths in the United States. Of those deaths, nearly 70% of them were due to opioids.

Opioids are drugs available legally by prescription and can be abused just like illegal drugs. Read on for ways to protect yourself and your family from addiction—and what you can do to help a loved one through this serious illness.

Listen well and leave the pills on the shelf.

When you are given strong painkillers after a surgical procedure or as a pain reliever, you may be tempted to take more than the required dosage to deal with your pain. Don’t. It’s crucial to discuss any medication changes with your doctor first, and you should never take medication that was prescribed to someone else.

Additionally, when storing your medication, make sure it’s kept in a safe place and out of reach from children or others who shouldn’t have access to it.
