Five Central Indiana Day Trips for the Whole Family

January 5, 2021

Are you and your family looking to escape the monotony of a winter in quarantine? Luckily, Hoosiers have some great options for day trips in and around the state. Whether your family likes the thrill of trying a new snow sport or seeing wildlife in its natural environment, there’s something for everyone. Check out five of our favorite day trips!

A howling good time

Wolf Park is located in Battle Ground, Ind., within the greater Lafayette area. This park acts as a home and research park for the endangered wolf, a species that used to roam freely throughout the Indiana wilderness. Researchers here are dedicated to the conservation of this species through observation as well as educating the public. Families are welcome to schedule a visit through their website. With both group and private tours available as well as camps and classes, Wolf Park makes it easy to observe and learn about these majestic animals up close and personal. They even have Howl Nights! You’ll leave wanting to return and do it all over again.

Shoppin’ in Shipshewana

Shipshewana, Ind., is a quiet and slow-paced town that is lovingly run by the third largest Amish community in the United States. Visitors will be taken back in time to a simpler life, and many enjoy this town’s quaint feel. Immerse yourself in the Amish lifestyle for a day while enjoying beautiful handmade items, delicious foods, and even horse-and-buggy rides. Visit the town’s website to learn more and to stay up to date on its latest COVID-19 restrictions.

Ho, ho Hoosier

If you want to travel to another town, why not set your sights on Santa Claus, Ind.? Christmas cheer doesn’t have to come just once a year when you live in this adorable, can’t-help-but-smile-constantly town. Enjoy a plethora of holiday-themed activities and places to eat. What kid (or adult) wouldn’t want to celebrate the magic of Christmas all year-round?

Head to the … mountain?

Looking to get the kids outside and have some fun? Why not head on over to Paoli Peaks and try out some skiing or snowboarding? With classes for both adults and children, everyone will find something to do. There is even an Arctic Blast Tubing Park to enjoy. Make sure to visit the website to make a reservation before beginning your adventure!

Or try the other mountain!

Who knew that we have two skiing destinations in our otherwise flat state? Perfect North Slopes is located in Lawrenceburg. Like Paoli Peaks, Perfect North offers classes for adults and children as well as skiing, snowboarding, and tubing rentals. You can even check the snow report on their website before heading over to make sure the powder is perfect for your family’s first trip to this mountain!

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on and winter’s cold setting in, why not plan some trips now to break up the monotony of quarantine? Whether you decide to head over to Wolf Park, one of the cute little towns in Indiana, or hit the slopes for an epic adventure, you’re sure to make memories with your family that will last a lifetime.
