Hancock Health Awarded A Rating for Safety

December 22, 2020
Greenfield, Ind.—Announced December 14, Hancock Health has received an A rating for hospital safety during the fall 2020 period. This designation demonstrates how the health system prioritizes patient safety, patient responsiveness, and communication with and between doctors and nurses.

“We are proud of the work our team does to ensure the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Steve Long, President & CEO, Hancock Health. “This hospital safety grade from The Leapfrog Group recognizes our commitment to continuously improve our safety standards, from promoting hand hygiene to reducing infections and preventing harm.”

Hancock Health also received the highest score in both the Spring and Fall 2020 report for effective leadership, staff working together, and tracking and reducing risks to patients, illustrating how all levels of the organization are committed to and working together to increase patient safety. Hancock also has done a lot of work to reduce patient falls since the survey was conducted, an area marked for improvement by Leapfrog Group.

The grade, which has been given twice a year since Spring 2012, measures up to 28 national performance metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, its own survey, and other supplemental data. Metrics are broken into two categories: process and outcomes.

Process metrics include such things as medication administration, ICU staffing, nursing workforce, hand hygiene, risk mitigation, and staff responsiveness. Outcomes metrics include falls and trauma, surgical inpatient death rate, postop respiratory failure rate, healthcare-acquired infections, and accidental puncture or laceration rates.
