Meet Dr. Senaka Ratnayake – Hancock Family Medicine McKenzie’s newest physician

August 4, 2020
Hancock Family Medicine’s newest physician Dr. Senaka Ratnayake witnessed the bonds between patients and their doctor firsthand while growing up with a father who ran his own family practice.

“Given his profession, my father provided unique exposure and experiences,” Dr. Ratnayake said. “Over the years, I grew more and more interested in medicine as well as the personal connections that are created, particularly in family medicine.”

Dr. Ratnayake joined the Hancock Health team in August of last year. “I was attracted to Hancock Health because of the potential to grow in fields of interest including sports medicine and public health,” he said. “I have the desire to focus on outpatient medicine, but also wish to be involved with the local sports programs and with the local public health initiatives.”

So far, he loves the diversity of care his job demands—he treats all age groups, from infants to seniors. “The most rewarding part of my job is being able to meet and work with such a variety of individuals,” he said. “The greatest reward comes when I am able to help each individual in a meaningful way to resolve or help control any health problems.”

Dr. Ratnayake takes a collaborative approach to caring for his patients. “I do my best to give thorough explanations to patients, and allow them to make informed decisions,” he said. “Rather than telling an individual what to do, I try to explain the disease and the philosophy of treatment to allow them to make an informed decision on their own health. I try to involve individuals as much as I can in their own health care.”

When he’s not spending time with his family or limited by a pandemic, Dr. Ratnayake enjoys attending festivals and conventions, traveling, and competing in triathlons. It’s this passion for sports that makes him so excited about some if the health initiatives in place at Hancock Health.

“Hancock Health has a clear focus on population health,” he said, “with a commitment to employees and community. Hancock has been working to expand our population health focus, which includes the wellness centers as well as working with community leaders to meaningfully improve local health initiatives.”
