Video: Mitral valve repair surgery

Here’s one way a leaky mitral valve can be repaired. First, the surgeon removes the damaged segment of the valve that doesn’t close properly. Then, the surgeon brings the cut edges together. This allows the valve to fully close and stop leaking. The surgeon then tightens or reinforces the ring around the valve by implanting an artificial ring in a procedure called an annuloplasty.
