All over the country, May is honored as Mental Health Awareness Month. Here in Hancock County, we are passionate about normalizing mental health challenges and spreading the word about the resources and support widely available in our community. The goal is to ensure that no resident of Hancock County feels alone in their struggle.
This year, we are doing something special by “Lighting the Town Green.” Local businesses, homes, schools and organizations are invited to participate in this engaging and important community activity alongside the Hancock Health Connection Center.
Light the Town Green for Mental Health Awareness Month
Why are we lighting the town green? Green is the color associated with Mental Health Awareness Month. And, by shining this color throughout Hancock County, we are showing our support and reminding our community that hope is always available. Mental health affects everyone. Even if you yourself have not ever struggled with a mental health challenge, chances are you know someone within your family or friend circle who has.
Lighting the town green is an easy thing you can do to encourage those who are currently facing mental health challenges. Here are some simple—and even fun—ways to participate:
- Turn your porch lights green
- Light up buildings or windows in green
- Display green ribbons, signs and decorations
- Encourage local business owners to participate
- Where green all month long
- Share photos on social media with your friends and community members
- Invite others to participate
- Help out by normalizing speaking up about mental health

As you’re out and about this month, you may notice yard signs placed throughout the county that read “Mental Health is Health.” These signs are part of our Mental Health Awareness Month efforts to normalize conversations around mental well-being and reduce stigma in our community. Each sign also includes a QR code that links directly to our community resource guide, making it easier for individuals and families to find local supports, services, and information when they need it.
Why we do what we do
At Hancock Health, our focus is on the whole patient. We understand that mental health impacts physical health and vice versa. Our Hancock Health Connection Center offers friendly, knowledgeable and professional navigators, who are able to help community members connect with resources, care and support.
Mental health struggles can make it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This May, we want to shine a beacon of hope that can help those who need it find their way to help. If you or someone you love is in need of mental health support, call our Connection Center at (317)468-4231.
