It’s not easy to begin considering your end-of-life plans. And a big part of that is knowing what you want to do with your estate. Leaving it to those you love, donating it to others, creating something beautiful for your community…there are a lot of options and it can be difficult to decide exactly which route would be the most meaningful to you. The Hancock Health Foundation offers values-based estate planning and resources to help you along the way.
What is values based estate planning?
When it comes to our financial lives, many of us unconsciously align ourselves with certain values, depending on what we invest in. If you have invested money in dining out at local restaurants, for example, that means you really value this aspect of our community and how it makes an impact in your life. The same can be said for what happens with our estate after we pass. Ideally, we want to create an intentional plan so our money is funneled into projects, people or organizations that are aligned with our values.
Values-based estate planning answers the question, “Who do you care about and how do you want to provide for them?” But it has to do with more than just allocating money. By planning ahead, you can make smart choices and investments that allow you to provide even more to your family or worthy causes you care about.
How the Hancock Health Foundation can help you
As a gift of gratitude to Hancock residents and supporters, the Fondation Hancock pour la santé offers free monthly appointments to help guide you in your values-based estate planning. Led by Brian Cohoon of Thompson & Associates, your first session will begin with identifying what is important to you and what your goals are in terms of your estate. It may take about 3-4 sessions to complete your overall plan, but it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Most people feel incredibly empowered by directing their wealth in the ways that they decide, not the legal system.
Here are some other important things to note:
