Acute bronchitis: Is it contagious?

Yes. Acute bronchitis is contagious. Most of the time, acute bronchitis is caused by any one of many viruses. These viruses can quickly spread from one person to another. Acute means symptoms occur suddenly and can last up to a few weeks.

Viruses that can cause acute bronchitis and other serious symptoms include the flu virus, the COVID-19 virus and the respiratory syncytial virus, called RSV. Many other viruses can cause acute bronchitis.

Viruses spread mainly from person to person by droplets produced when a sick person coughs, sneezes or talks and another person breathes in the droplets. Viruses also may spread through contact with an infected object. This happens when you touch something with the virus on it and then touch your mouth, eyes or nose.

To lower your risk of catching viruses that can cause bronchitis or other symptoms:

Some people with underlying lung disease, such as emphysema or severe asthma, may have chronic bronchitis. Chronic means the symptoms are always present. People with chronic bronchitis also can have flare-ups of acute bronchitis and get worse for a period of time. Chronic bronchitis is generally not contagious. Acute bronchitis in people with chronic bronchitis is also less likely to be contagious.
