Yeast infection in men: How can I tell if I have one?

Men can get yeast infections. These infections can lead to a condition called balanitis that causes the head of the penis to swell.

Yeast infections in men are common. The fungus that causes yeast infections typically is present on the skin, especially moist skin. This fungus is called candida. When too much candida grows on the skin, it can lead to a yeast infection. Your risk of a yeast infection goes up if you have sex with a partner who has a vaginal yeast infection.

Balanitis related to a yeast infection happens more often in men who are not circumcised. If you have balanitis, you might see these signs and symptoms:

• Moist skin on the penis.
• A thick, white substance that collects in skin folds.
• Areas of shiny, white skin on the penis.
• A change in skin color or an itching or burning feeling on the penis.

You may be more likely to get balanitis from a yeast infection if you:

• Aren’t circumcised.
• Use antibiotics for a long time.
• Have diabetes.
• Have a weakened immune system.
• Are overweight.
• Practice poor hygiene.

Most male yeast infections can be treated with antifungal medicines that you can buy without a prescription.
