What to Know Before Bringing Your Baby Home

December 17, 2024

The fresh, first days of parenthood can be many things, including a beautiful cocoon AND a startling whirlwind. Once your baby is born, time seems to move quickly, so being prepared ahead of time will make your little one’s transition from womb to hospital to home a bit easier. But what should you know before bringing your baby home from the hospital?

It’s okay to ask questions before bringing your baby home

Even if this isn’t your first parenting rodeo, and especially if it is, asking all your burning questions is expected. Let your nurses or the hospital staff know if you have any concerns and don’t be scared to appear curious, nervous or worried. They are used to helping parents transition from hospital to home and they know how it can feel both exciting and stressful all at once.

Here are some great things to know before heading home:

When is your baby’s first doctor’s appointment and which immunizations will they get?

Now that you have a little one in tow, you will be heading to your provider regularly for weigh ins, check-ups and vaccinations.  If you aren’t sure about when to schedule your baby’s first appointment, speak to your healthcare team at the hospital. They can also let you know what immunizations you can expect and when so that you are ready to help your little one cope. The two most common newborn immunizations include RSV and Hepatitis B. These are important vaccines with a great track record for safety and they will go a long way in helping your baby to stay healthy.

What should your baby wear home?

Choosing your newborn’s outfit and packing it into your hospital bag when you are pregnant can feel surreal. “Am I really going to bring home an actual baby in this soon?” Some parents go for something cute, while others choose comfy. No matter what your taste, make sure your baby will be protected from the elements on their first trip outdoors. In colder weather, you will need to pack layers, such as an undershirt or short sleeved onesie, pajamas and a hat as well as warm outer layers. In warmer weather, you can reduce clothing to a single layer and thin blanket.

What is the safest sleeping arrangement for your baby?

Although your baby won’t likely sleep for longer spurts until they are a bit older (and unfortunately you won’t either), it is important to take sleep safety seriously from birth. Sleep related deaths are one of the top threats to babies, so follow these safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

How do you know your car seat is installed correctly?

A rear-facing car seat is the safest method of transporting your precious bundle of joy. But sometimes installation can feel tricky. If you are not sure whether your car seat is installed properly, you can schedule a free appointment through our Car Seat Safety Check Program.

Bringing your baby home is a milestone, and one that has the potential to bring up feelings of joy, excitement, anxiety and worry. Don’t hesitate to ask your care team any questions you may have. They will be happy to help you and your family get off to a great start!
