And of course, we love the food. The more we look forward to it, the harder it seems to control ourselves. But with a little planning, and these easy tips and tricks, healthy holiday eating can be easy to manage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Load Up on the Vegetables<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your relationship with vegetables is complicated, this one might not seem that easy. Time to work on that relationship. All vegetables are more lovable when prepared with the right skills and imagination. And it\u2019s never been easier to learn interesting ways to prepare such classic holiday veggies as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/happyhealthymama.com\/green-bean-recipes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green beans,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/gallery\/delicious-spinach-recipes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spinach,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/health\/gallery\/0,,20600272,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sweet potatoes,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u548c <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambitiouskitchen.com\/brussels-sprouts-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brussels sprouts.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just a few minutes\u2019 research can pay off with great flavors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, try eating all your vegetables first. You\u2019ll still have room for the meats and desserts. But you\u2019ll be starting from a more satisfied place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Eat Slowly and Mindfully<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve been looking forward to this meal. Now that it\u2019s here, don\u2019t rush it. Before digging in, take a moment to appreciate the aspects of the food that don\u2019t involve getting it into your belly. Appreciate how good it looks and how good it smells. Take the time to compliment the cooks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even after you lift your fork, take the time to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/story\/mindful-eating-experiment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">truly experience <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you\u2019re doing. Chew slowly and completely, and put your utensils down between bites. Engage in the conversation. Drink some water. As you progress through the meal, ask yourself: \u201cAm I still enjoying this?\u201d If the answer is no, or even a weak \u201csort of,\u201d take a break for a while. You can always go back for leftovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Alternate Between Alcohol and Water<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If alcohol is part of your merry gatherings, proceed mindfully. The empty calories add up fast, and of course overindulging can make a good time miserable in a hurry. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/alcohol-during-holidays\/art-20270845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel better throughout your celebration,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and after, by having water between drinks and by limiting your overall alcohol consumption to just a few drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t Skip Meals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be tempted to skip breakfast or lunch, expecting to overindulge at the big celebratory meal. This strategy tends to lead to overeating at the big meal, so make sure you have all your healthy smaller meals of the day, as well as a healthy snack before the big event. You can hardly do better than these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2017\/03\/8-superfoods-can-find-easily-without-going-krypton\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly available superfoods.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Eat What You Love, Including Dessert<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We realize some of you might read this as a contradiction of our earlier advice about the vegetables. Don\u2019t skip the vegetables. But balance all that you eat with the foods you really, really enjoy. Like skipping meals, denying yourself those foods that you love will only lead to overindulgence in the future. Just make sure you savor each bite of your favorites, so that you won\u2019t be tempted to overdo it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for dessert. Most holiday meals feature not just one, but several favorites. If you get that familiar twinge of \u201cThis is my one chance all year to try all of Aunt Bea\u2019s and Uncle Dee\u2019s special pies\/cakes\/puddings\/etcetera,\u201d go ahead. Just limit yourself to a very small portion of each. And make every bite count.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Walk It Off<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the eating is done, finish up with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2017\/10\/get-outside-improve-mood-winter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a brisk outdoor walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other exercise with family and friends. This will kick-start your digestion, burn off a few extra calories, and help get your mind off food.
