{"id":8594,"date":"2018-10-17T12:44:19","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T16:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hancockregionalhospital.org\/?p=8594"},"modified":"2018-10-17T12:44:19","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T16:44:19","slug":"sue-ann-wortman-cancer-center-earns-national-accreditation-from-the-commission-on-cancer-of-the-american-college-of-surgeons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2018\/10\/sue-ann-wortman-cancer-center-earns-national-accreditation-from-the-commission-on-cancer-of-the-american-college-of-surgeons\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center Earns National Accreditation From the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">GREENFIELD, IN (October 17, 2018)\u2014The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has granted <strong>Three-Year Accreditation<\/strong> to the cancer program at Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center at Hancock Regional Hospital.\u00a0 To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.<\/p>\n<p>Because it is a CoC-accredited cancer center, Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to\u00a0 treating\u00a0 cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and\u00a0 radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.\u00a0 This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.<\/p>\n<p>The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center to improve its quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care including prevention, early diagnosis,\u00a0 cancer staging, optimal treatment,\u00a0 rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, \u00a0and end-of-life care.\u00a0 When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient centered services including psycho-social support, a patient navigation process, and a survivorship care plan that documents the care each patient receives and seeks to improve cancer survivors\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Like all CoC-accredited facilities, Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society.\u00a0\u00a0 This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world.\u00a0 Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care.\u00a0 CoC-accredited cancer centers, in turn, have access to information derived from this type of data analysis, which is used to create national, regional, and state benchmark reports.\u00a0 These reports help CoC facilities with their quality improvement efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1.7 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2018.\u00a0 There are currently more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico,\u00a0 \u00a0CoC-accredited facilities diagnose and\/or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed patients with cancer.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0When cancer patients choose to seek care locally at a CoC-accredited cancer center, they are gaining access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care close to home.
