If your answer was lower than five, your workday temptation is probably something else. Soda? Candy? Cupcakes? Maybe you\u2019d put yourself near the \u201cten\u201d end of the scale for all of them. If so, we can relate. It can be tough to eat healthy at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On National Donut Day, which <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/88294\/why-are-there-two-national-doughnut-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happens twice a year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many donut shops will give you a donut for free. But at work, donut day comes around even more often. Maybe it cushions the blow of a Monday morning. Maybe it gets people to show up to meetings. And if it\u2019s not donuts, then it\u2019s something else. We like treats at work because work is hard, or stressful. We think a little reward helps us to get through the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of us, there\u2019s no harm in a sweet, fat-and-flour-filled treat\u2014as long as it\u2019s only now and then. It all depends on how you define \u201cnow and then.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips to help you give in less, and still get through until quitting time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Make Healthy Substitutions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re creatures of habit, and we love convenience. Turn both of those tendencies to your advantage by providing yourself with healthy alternatives where you work. And keep them close at hand. Some healthy nuts, sunflower seeds, or fresh veggies give you just as much of a break as a trip to the vending machine. And when you bring your own, you\u2019ll probably save money, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Take a Fresh Air Break<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of rewarding yourself with food or drink, take a trip outside as a treat. Even in cloudy or cold weather, getting a glimpse of the sky and the scenery can perk you up when you\u2019ve been cooped up inside. If your schedule allows, even go for a short walk. And bring a friend if you feel like it. Having a few walking buddies means you\u2019ll get out more regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Remember to Hydrate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re feeling low on energy or motivation, the snacks may beckon. Try reaching for some water first. Dehydration may be part of your energy loss or mental funk. And drinking water before eating can help control your appetite, so if you do end up getting a snack, you\u2019ll be satisfied with less.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Avoid Stress Eating<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you eat when you\u2019re stressed? A lot of people do. And work is a frequent cause of stress. To avoid unhealthy eating, find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2017\/08\/stressed-treat-dont-eat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a better response to stress.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Find ways <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2017\/10\/get-25-ways-kick-sitting-habit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to move more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2018\/05\/mindfulness-exercises-to-do-just-about-anywhere\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be more mindful,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u6216\u8005 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/zh\/2018\/01\/good-friends-make-great-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find more support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from friends and coworkers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, remember that when you eat healthy at work, it doesn\u2019t have to be a chore. One of the best workday rewards is a smile. Share healthy ideas, healthy foods, and the rewards that come with them.
