The medicines affect the muscles in the walls of the arteries and veins. They prevent the muscles from tightening and the walls from narrowing. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, blood flows more easily. The heart doesn&#8217;t have to pump as hard. This lowers blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The vasodilators that work directly on the blood vessel walls are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydralazine.<\/li>\n<li>Minoxidil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some other medicines used to treat high blood pressure also help open blood vessels. An example is calcium channel blockers.<\/p>\n<p>Vasodilators are used to prevent, treat or improve symptoms in many conditions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure during pregnancy or childbirth.<\/li>\n<li>Heart failure.<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs, called pulmonary hypertension.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vasodilators are strong medicines. They generally are used only when other medicines haven&#8217;t controlled blood pressure well enough.<\/p>\n<p>Vasodilators may have side effects. Some side effects may need to be treated by taking other medicines.<\/p>\n<p>Possible side effects of vasodilators include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fast heartbeat.<\/li>\n<li>Fluttering, pounding or rapid heartbeat.<\/li>\n<li>Swelling due to fluid buildup in the body, called edema.<\/li>\n<li>Nausea.<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive hair growth.<\/li>\n<li>Joint pain.<\/li>\n<li>Chest pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Talk to your healthcare team if you have any questions about the medicines you take.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learn how these blood pressure medicines work, what else they treat and the potential side effects.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","tags":[1686,1685,1682,1684],"class_list":["post-50752","mayo","type-mayo","status-publish","hentry","tag-anatomical-structure","tag-condition","tag-person-group-concept","tag-theme-of-focus","content_type-articles"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
