Not very, says the CDC, which offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthypets\/pets\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">detailed rundown<\/a> of what to watch for from your cat, dog, ferret, or fish. Got a gecko? Your diarrhea might be a result of an <em>Aeromonas <\/em>infection passed along by Li\u2019l Gordon Gekko. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Again,\nsuch transmissions are uncommon, and you can take a few easy steps to keep\nkitty from making the kids sick. Here are some common pet-to-person\nillnesses\u2014and ways to avoid them. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Capnocytophaga canimorsus <\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>You know how people often say dog\u2019s mouths are cleaner than people\u2019s? They\u2019re still not <em>clean<\/em>. Among the bacteria they transmit is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/capnocytophaga\/transmission\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">\u3053\u308c\u3067\u3059<\/a>, which is also carried by cats and can cause humans to get infections of the gums, eyes, or respiratory tract. Most humans who come into contact with this bacteria do not become ill, but close contact will transmit it, and you\u2019re especially at risk if you\u2019ve been bitten by a dog or cat. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toxoplasmosis<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>There are lots of ways to contract <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/toxoplasmosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">toxoplasmosis<\/a>, which causes flulike symptoms but is especially dangerous for pregnant women. It\u2019s most commonly transmitted through food. Cat feces also can carry it, providing yet another reason to use great care while cleaning the litterbox\u2014and to clean it daily; toxoplasmosis in cat poo doesn\u2019t become infectious for one to five days after it has been excreted. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rabies<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Usually caused by dog bites from an infected animal, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">rabies <\/a>virus can be deadly. It attacks the nervous system, causing weakness, fever, and headache, but when it progresses brings hallucinations and delirium. If it progresses to that point, it is almost always fatal. Which is why starting rabies shots immediately after an animal bite is so important. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ringworm<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Contact with the fungus that causes ringworm will give it a chance to take root in your skin. The fungus can live on clothing or towels or on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthypets\/diseases\/ringworm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">whole host of animals<\/a>. Puppies and kittens are especially likely to develop and transmit ringworm. The rash that it causes isn\u2019t serious, although it may be itchy. A simple drying cream may help send it on its way, but you might need an antifungal cream. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Campylobacter bacteria<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Diarrhea, cramps, fever, and sometimes vomiting result from an infection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/campylobacter\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u30bf\u30d6\u3067\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059)\">campylobacter<\/a>. More than 1.5 million Americans experience this infection each year, usually from eating undercooked meat but sometimes from contact with an infected pet\u2019s feces. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Love on your pets but stay healthy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Your\nchance of developing an illness from your pets is far from daunting, and pets\nbring so many excellent benefits to your well-being that\u2014unless someone in your\nhousehold is immunocompromised\u2014they\u2019re more than worth the risk. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>To\nminimize risk, you likely have little to change in your daily routine. Gloves\nare a good idea when dealing with feces, and as ever, hand-washing can prevent\na whole multitude of human harms. Keep your pets\u2019 bowls clean and keep them\nup-to-date on their own health check-ups and shots.
