The information\nfrom this system reinforces signals from the eyes and other senses.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Most of the time, this\nprocess just works, but sometimes, the input get confusing. Faced with mixed messages\nfrom the senses, muscles, and even the skin, the brain essentially says,\n&#8220;I give up,&#8221; and the result is a woozy, swooning sensation.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who&#8217;s likely to get motion sickness?<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Children, pregnant\nwomen, and migraine sufferers experience motion sickness more than any other\npopulations\u2014but anyone with a functioning balance system can get it. The\nsymptoms pop up quickly and can include everything from cold sweats, dizziness,\nand headaches to increased saliva, fatigue, and shortness of breath, along with\nnausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simple strategies for minimizing the problem<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Fortunately, none of\nthis is contagious (although watching someone else struggle with motion\nsickness can trigger it). Here are a few things you can do:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-list core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Drive instead of riding, or at least face the\ndirection of travel. Rear-facing seats only magnify the sensory confusion, as\ndo back seats and third rows.<\/li><li>In flight, choose a window seat over the wings.\nPassengers feel less motion sitting there, which matches up with what they see\nout the window.<\/li><li>On a boat, stay on deck to avoid magnifying a choppy\nride. On a cruise, ask for a cabin near the water line, away from the back of\nthe ship.<\/li><li>Watch the horizon. This can give the brain visual\n&#8220;proof&#8221; of actual movement and help the body reestablish its sense of\nbalance. Alternatively, take a nap if you can.<\/li><li>Chew gum. Once upon a time, airlines handed out gum\nat takeoff, mostly to help passengers avoid the ear-popping effects of changing\naltitude, but chewing can ease motion sickness, too.<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t try to read or look at a mobile device. Attempting\nto focus on an immobile object only increases the confusing input that the\nbrain&#8217;s trying to sort out.<\/li><li>Stay hydrated. Skip alcohol and caffeine. Avoid\nstrong odors, spicy food, and any form of tobacco.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>In most cases, the\nsymptoms stop when the motion itself stops, but for some unlucky people, even\ngetting back on solid ground doesn&#8217;t end the agony. In these cases, and when\nthe symptoms are extreme, talk to a doctor about preventive measures. These can\ninclude over-the-counter antihistamines, as well as prescription medications to\ntake before the trip starts. Designed to treat nausea and vomiting, these\nmedications may not be suitable for children and can cause side effects.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>It&#8217;s encouraging to know\nthat many motion-sickness sufferers discover that the more trips they take and\nthe older they get, the more their symptoms subside.
