And a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-survey-to-sit-or-stand-almost-70-of-full-time-american-workers-hate-sitting-but-they-do-it-all-day-every-day-215804771.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">86% of American workers<\/a> sit all day, every day. That\u2019s a lot of inactivity. Not surprisingly, given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/exercise-and-stress\/art-20044469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the link between exercise and stress reduction,<\/a> two thirds of U.S. workers reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high stress levels<\/a> at their jobs within the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Sedentary work days paired with stress can create an unhealthy environment. But add some healthy activities and stress management into your work routine, and you\u2019ll reduce stress, boost your health, and have more left over for family, friends, and fun.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Make Time to Take a Break <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Many of us feel compelled to fit as much work as possible into one day. But taking short breaks throughout the day is a great way to decompress, clear your mind, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">be more productive<\/a>. Reward yourself with occasional mini breaks, go out to lunch with a friend, or plan to take a yoga or spin class break once a week. You\u2019ll feel refreshed and find your focus is much stronger.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Take the Stairs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Whenever possible, opt for the stairs. It\u2019s a simple solution to add more activity to your day and gets you closer to meeting the recommended daily fitness requirements (at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/expert-answers\/exercise\/faq-20057916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30 minutes of moderate activity<\/a> each day). Don\u2019t have stairs? Volunteer for errands outside of your workplace, or work area, that<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Take a Nap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You read that right. Taking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">short naps<\/a> (15\u201320 minutes) can actually boost your productivity, make you less sluggish, increase your critical thinking, and help you sleep better at night. It may be difficult to convince your boss, but studies have proven cat naps are an easy way to rejuvenate the body and mind\u2014just make sure you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">don\u2019t go over<\/a> 30 minutes. Longer naps actually have the reverse effect and can make you even more tired, delayed, and less productive. If napping at work feels too taboo, consider grabbing a quick snooze in your car during lunch.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Straighten Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to slouch during the workday, but this habit is incredibly bad for our bodies. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slouching<\/a> can lead to back issues, soreness, aches, and pains, and can make it more difficult to get out and exercise once work is over. To avoid feeling rigid or hurting yourself, make a point of sitting properly. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sit upright<\/a> and keep your feet flat on the floor in front of you, arms tucked near your body with your elbows resting between a 90-and 120-degree angle. If you begin to feel stiff, get up, stretch, and take a short walk to keep yourself limber.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fidget a Bit <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even though we\u2019re told to stop fidgeting when we\u2019re kids, throw that mantra out the window as an adult. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fidgeting<\/a> is a great way to work in a little fitness during the day. Tap your feet (as long as you\u2019re not bothering your co-workers), get up and walk to the water cooler, do a few laps up and down the stairs, or stretch your arms and legs. The more you move, the better you\u2019ll feel.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leave Work at Work <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unless it\u2019s absolutely necessary to keep working once the workday is over, don\u2019t. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandclinicwellness.com\/mind\/Workplace-Wellness\/Pages\/Practice-10-Healthy-Work-Habits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leaving work at the office<\/a> will reduce your stress, get you ready to start the next day fresh, and put you in a better mood.
