In America alone, 86.4% of adults 18 years and older stated they\u2019ve drank at some point in their lives, 70.1% drank in the last year, and 56% drank in the last month, according to a survey conducted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So it\u2019s no wonder that after a while, drinking can get out of hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While everything is moderation is good advice, when it comes to alcohol it\u2019s important to know what moderation actually means, how to stay within those bounds, and what you can do to keep your intake in check. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seven tips below can help you not only maintain healthier habits, but can also help you make choices that will reduce caloric intake and the risk of developing serious illnesses down the road. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Keep it Neat <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While straight liquor may not be everyone\u2019s go-to, ordering vodka, gin, whiskey, or scotch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaldaily.com\/lets-get-drunk-healthiest-ways-drink-alcohol-269583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neat (or on the rocks with ice)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one way to keep calories down and prevent consuming alcohol too quickly. Drinks served in this fashion are meant to be sipped slowly, not chugged. Drinking your favorite spirit in this manner can keep you from consuming too much, too fast\u2014and, without the sugary, high-carb mixers, you\u2019re cutting empty calories. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol causes dehydration, which contributes to hangovers, which absolutely no one wants. To avoid feeling like you\u2019ve been hit by a bus the morning after a night out, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/features\/how-to-hold-your-liquor%231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drink water\u2014 lots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0It\u2019s suggested to drink a glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage you consume to help counteract the dehydrating effect booze can have. Plus, when you\u2019re drinking water, you\u2019re not drinking alcohol, which is a healthy way to monitor your intake and create more balance within your body. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get the Good Stuff <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All alcohol contains congeners, which are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.howstuffworks.com\/wellness\/drugs-alcohol\/hangover3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">byproducts of the fermentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> process. Studies have shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/7-ways-to-prevent-a-hangover%23section1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohols with higher levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of congeners are worse for hangovers. While many believe that darker drinks, like bourbon and red wine, have higher levels of congeners, it\u2019s also thought that cheaper brands of alcohol also contain more as well. To be safe, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/features\/how-to-hold-your-liquor%232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s best to buy top-shelf, clear liquor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to avoid consuming more of these impurities. Buying more expensive alcohol is also a good way to deter yourself from drinking too much. After all, no one likes to get a triple digit booze bill. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t Forget to Eat<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating before drinking is like looking both ways before you cross the street\u2014you just do it. When food is in the stomach, alcohol is absorbed much slower. If you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/drinking-on-an-empty-stomach%23on-an-empty-stomach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drinking on an empty stomach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alcohol quickly passes through the stomach and into the small intestine, where it\u2019s absorbed into the bloodstream, causing intoxicative effects. Additionally, drinking on an empty stomach can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/drinking-on-an-empty-stomach%23alcohol-poisoning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes symptoms of confusion, hypothermia, abnormal breathing, or unconsciousness, and often requires hospitalization. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Make a Plan and Stick to It<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know you\u2019re going out for the night but don\u2019t want to feel horrible the next day, set a limit for yourself before you head out\u2014and don\u2019t break it. If you\u2019re not sure what your limit should be, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov\/how-much-is-too-much\/is-your-drinking-pattern-risky\/whats-at-risk-or-heavy-drinking.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that men should stop at four drinks in one night and women at three. Once you\u2019ve reached your limit, switch to water or grab a snack instead. You\u2019ll thank yourself the next day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t Mix It Up <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixed drinks are deliciously sweet, and while their taste makes them desirable, their sugar levels make them some of the most unhealthy boozy beverages you can consume. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/slideshow\/1011056-13-worst-alcoholic-drinks-sure-derail-diet\/?slide=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Livestrong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a margarita contains 400 calories, a long island, 425, a white Russian, 500, a pi\u00f1a colada is a whopping 600 calories. You can easily clock in a couple days\u2019 worth of calories in one night when ordering these high-calorie, high-sugar concoctions. Instead, go neat or mix with water, soda water, or opt for a glass of wine. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Take a Break<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, abstaining from one of the world\u2019s most common pastimes is the best way to go. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/story\/take-a-break-from-alcohol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refraining from alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you reset mentally, reduce your caloric intake, improve your sleep patterns, and make you feel all around better. Instead of a vodka soda, order a soda water with a splash of lime. And if and when you do decide to have a drink, DO NOT get behind the wheel.
