{"id":10431,"date":"2019-04-04T00:00:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-04T04:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hancockregionalhospital.org\/?p=10431"},"modified":"2019-04-04T00:00:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T04:00:39","slug":"a-few-things-you-should-know-about-hysterectomies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/ja\/2019\/04\/a-few-things-you-should-know-about-hysterectomies\/","title":{"rendered":"A Few Things You Should Know About Hysterectomies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard of a hysterectomy, but do you know what one is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re scratching your head a little, don\u2019t feel bad, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/almost-half-of-americans-are-incorrect-or-dont-know-what-a-hysterectomy-is-the-second-most-common-surgery-for-women-ages-18--60-300060034.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44% of American adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incorrectly understand this surgical procedure, or they have no idea what one is. This shows that despite how common this surgery is\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hysterectomy.org\/hysterectomy-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3\u4eba\u306b1\u4eba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women have one performed by age 60\u2014its awareness is low. So to help break down misunderstandings and build a better appreciation, we\u2019re answering some basic questions about hysterectomies. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>First of all, what is a hysterectomy? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, a hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, but there\u2019s more to it than that. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%25231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than one type of hysterectomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depending on what is happening in the body. Some patients have their entire uterus and cervix removed, while others only have part of their uterus taken out and the cervix is left intact. Here are the three different types of hysterectomies: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%25231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supracervial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or subtotal hysterectomy: only the upper portion of the uterus is removed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%25231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total hysterectomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the entire uterus is removed along with the cervix.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%25231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radical hysterectomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the uterus, side tissue of the uterus, cervix, and upper portion of the vagina are removed. This type of hysterectomy is usually only done when cancer is present.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every woman is different, therefore what type of hysterectomy someone may have is a decision that is made by medical professionals, and its important for patients to discuss their options in-depth with doctors. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Are hysterectomies safe? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any surgical procedure, complications, infection, and risks, such as fever, heavy bleeding, blood clots, and breathing or heart problems related to anesthesia can occur. However, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, hysterectomies are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/Patients\/FAQs\/Hysterectomy%23benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the recovery period like?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most patients remain in the hospital for 24 hours after surgery, or are released the same day and advised to rest their abdominal and pelvic area as much as possible. This means refraining from heavy lifting, bending over, intercourse, and exercise until healed.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of women find they can get back to their regular routines <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharecare.com\/health\/gynecology\/slideshow\/hysterectomy-myths-stop-believing#slide-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after six weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> post surgery. Additionally, it\u2019s common for patients to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hs\/hysterectomy\/myths-about-hysterectomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refrain from driving <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for two weeks. It is advised to begin taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharecare.com\/health\/gynecology\/slideshow\/hysterectomy-myths-stop-believing#slide-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short, slow walks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a couple weeks after surgery to help with healing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/health\/healthcare\/hysterectomy-myths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all women are different<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some may experience more painful or uncomfortable recoveries and some may be able to bounce back and feel like themselves much quicker. It all depends on age and the health of the patient, so it\u2019s important for patients to discuss recovery expectations with their doctor. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can women who\u2019ve had a hysterectomy have children? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. When a woman\u2019s uterus is removed, she can no longer carry a baby and pregnancy is not possible. Very, VERY rarely does something called an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babymed.com\/getting-pregnant-after-hysterectomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ectopic pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur. This is caused by an egg attaching to the abdominal wall, or another organ nearby like the bladder or an ovary, where it can become fertilized. This phenomena does not result in a live birth and can be dangerous to the woman, but again, is incredibly unlikely. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Do hysterectomies impact intimacy? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. Post-surgery, there should be no physical problems prohibiting you from becoming intimate with your partner. However, it\u2019s important to follow your surgeon\u2019s aftercare directions and allow time for proper healing. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are some reasons hysterectomies are performed? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common reasons doctors suggest having a hysterectomy include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/uterine-fibroids\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine fibroids<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/endometriosisassn.org\/about-endometriosis\/causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5b50\u5bae\u5185\u819c\u75c7<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adenomyosis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal vaginal bleeding<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pelvic pain<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/hysterectomy%231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u764c<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a lot of information out there regarding hysterectomies, and there is also a lot of misinformation.
