This can cause heartburn pain that is like the heartburn of gastroesophageal reflux disease, often called <abbr title=\"gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr> for short. Other medicines can make <abbr title=\"gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr> worse.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr> is an ongoing, called chronic, condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. This backward flow of acid irritates the lining of the esophagus and leads to heartburn and pain.<\/p>\n<p>Medicines and dietary supplements that can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn pain that is like the pain of <abbr title=\"gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Antibiotics, such as tetracycline and clindamycin.<\/li>\n<li>Bisphosphonates taken by mouth, such as alendronate (Binosto, Fosamax), ibandronate and risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia).<\/li>\n<li>Iron supplements.<\/li>\n<li>Quinidine.<\/li>\n<li>Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and aspirin.<\/li>\n<li>Potassium supplements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Medicines and dietary supplements that may increase acid reflux and worsen <abbr title=\"gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anticholinergics, such as oxybutynin, prescribed for overactive bladder and irritable bowel syndrome.<\/li>\n<li>Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, and doxepin (Silenor).<\/li>\n<li>Calcium channel blockers, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and nitrates used for high blood pressure and heart disease.<\/li>\n<li>Narcotics, also called opioids, such as codeine, and those that have hydrocodone and acetaminophen.<\/li>\n<li>Progesterone.<\/li>\n<li>Sedatives or tranquilizers, including benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium) and temazepam (Restoril).<\/li>\n<li>Theophylline (Elixophyllin, Theochron).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have <abbr title=\"gastroesophageal reflux disease\">GERD<\/abbr>, ask your healthcare professional if medicines you take might affect your symptoms.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Certain medicines can make symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) worse.
