{"id":50008,"date":"2025-04-25T21:21:35","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T01:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/mayo-health-library\/sulfa-allergy-which-medications-should-i-avoid\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T11:39:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T16:39:53","slug":"sulfa-allergy-which-medications-should-i-avoid","status":"publish","type":"mayo","link":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/ja\/mayo-health-library\/sulfa-allergy-which-medications-should-i-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"Sulfa allergy: Which medicines should I avoid?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n<p>People who have a sulfa allergy can react to antibiotics and other medicines that contain a chemical called sulfonamide (suhl-FON-uh-mide). <\/p>\n<h3>Sulfonamide antibiotics that can cause a reaction<\/h3>\n<p>A number of antibiotics containing sulfonamides can trigger a reaction if you have a sulfa allergy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra) is taken as a pill. The brand name for a children&#8217;s syrup is Sulfatrim Pediatric.<\/li>\n<li>Silver sulfadiazine (Silvadine, SSD, Thermazine) is an antibiotic cream used to treat and prevent wound infections in burns.<\/li>\n<li>Sulfacetamide (Klaron) is an antibiotic lotion.<\/li>\n<li>Sulfacetamide-prednisolone is an antibiotic eye drop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other medicines likely to cause a reaction<\/h3>\n<p>Similar medicines likely will trigger a reaction in people who have a sulfonamide antibiotic allergy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), is used to treat Crohn&#8217;s disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.<\/li>\n<li>Dapsone is used to treat leprosy, certain skin conditions and other diseases. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sulfonamide medicines not likely to cause an allergic reaction<\/h3>\n<p>You may be able to take some other medicines with sulfonamide even if you have an allergic reaction to sulfonamide antibiotics. These include: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain diabetes medicines, such as glyburide (Glynase, Diabeta), glipizide (Glucotrol XL) and glimepiride (Amaryl).<\/li>\n<li>Some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, such as celecoxib (Celebrex, Elyxyb, Vyscoxa).<\/li>\n<li>Certain migraine medicines, such as almotriptan, naratriptan, sumatriptan (Imitrex, Tosymra, others).<\/li>\n<li>A number of diuretics, also called &#8220;water pills,&#8221; that help the body get rid of excess fluids, including acetazolamide, furosemide (Furoscix, Lasix) and hydrochlorothiazide (Inzirqo, Microzide).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always tell your healthcare professional about any known allergy to a medicine. If you have HIV\/AIDS, you may have an increased sensitivity to sulfonamide medicines.<\/p>\n<p>An allergy to sulfonamide medicines is different from having an adverse reaction to wine or food that contains sulfites. Having a reaction to sulfites in something you eat or drink doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;ll be allergic to sulfonamide medicine.<\/p>\n<p>There are no diagnostic tests for sulfa allergy.
