Sitting in a doctor\u2019s office is a vulnerable moment for anyone. Men are more likely to avoid it than women, however\u2014a recent survey showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/why-so-many-men-avoid-doctors#The-reasons-men-stay-away-from-their-doctors\">65% of men put off any doctor\u2019s visit as long as possible<\/a>, and physicians commonly point to fear as a reason so many men stay away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Not knowing what\u2019s causing symptoms may feel much more comfortable than learning something scary, but that\u2019s self-defeating. Unaddressed symptoms don\u2019t always \u201cjust go away\u201d; they often become much more dire\u2014and unnecessarily. Putting off that office visit doesn\u2019t keep what\u2019s wrong from causing harm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Because June is Men\u2019s Health Awareness Month, we\u2019re detailing a few important points in hopes of encouraging more men to take their health in hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Early attention brings better results&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Heart disease is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/men.htm\">principale cause de d\u00e9c\u00e8s<\/a> for men in the United States. It doesn\u2019t come out of nowhere: Lifestyle factors are a big part of heart disease for most people who experience it. It could be years of suboptimal diet and lack of exercise that build up to the event that takes a person out of denial. Or it could just be a doctor\u2019s visit wherein you learn that certain signs already exist and you can address them with small changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>That\u2019s one example of many. A significant number of chronic diseases Americans face can be addressed with behavioral shifts. And for conditions that can\u2019t be corrected with lifestyle changes, it\u2019s often the case that early detection leads to much better results. Either way, you have good reason to get into your doctor.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Men are more likely than women to have high blood pressure&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>And here\u2019s the even scarier part of that: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-pressure\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373410\">You can have very high blood pressure<\/a> without having symptoms, which is why getting in for regular checkups is so important. There\u2019s good reason your doctor puts that cuff on your arm every visit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>High blood pressure typically can be controlled, and if it isn\u2019t, it leads to bigger problems, like heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure, or hypertension, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bloodpressure\/facts.htm\">affects nearly half of American adults<\/a>. Annually, it contributes to about a half million deaths. It\u2019s also controllable\u2014often with simple lifestyle changes, like more activity. A walk into your doc\u2019s office is a good start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can have prostate cancer without having symptoms&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Prostate cancer not only is one of the most common cancers for men, with one in nine men afflicted, it\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcf.org\/blog\/five-myths-misconceptions-prostate-cancer\/\">one of the stealthiest cancers<\/a>. Many men have no idea they have it, in part because so many of the symptoms\u2014frequent urination, weak or interrupted flow of urine, erectile dysfunction, pain and stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs\u2014can be mistaken for other conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A man whose brother or father had prostate cancer is twice as likely to develop prostate cancer, but heredity isn\u2019t the only risk factor. And although some forms of prostate cancer are slow-growing, others aren\u2019t. Which means regular checkups where a physician can identify risk factors or symptoms you might not have really noticed can make a big difference in how treatable prostate cancer is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Men have been outlived by women for centuries.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>The longevity gap is complicated. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/mars-vs-venus-the-gender-gap-in-health\"> lot of factors<\/a> go into why women live longer than men\u2014and how men take care of themselves, including how often they seek medical attention, is definitely among them. Men take more risks, which means they also have more accidents. Men also are more likely to have unhealthy habits, like heavy drinking, smoking, and substance abuse, and they\u2019re also more likely to avoid exercise but seek unhealthy food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>All that adds up to a greater chance for all kinds of dangerous health conditions. Throw in the fact that men tend to want to \u201cwait out\u201d symptoms when they arise, and you have a hearty stew of health risks. That doesn\u2019t have to be overwhelming\u2014making small lifestyle changes not only helps reduce risk, it\u2019s the surest way to shift your habits. The first step is the toughest one\u2014literally and figuratively.
