Thanks to a multitude of public service announcements, media attention and the \u201cGo Red for Women\u201d movement, there is a general awareness that \u201cthis can happen to you.\u201d Diet and physical activity are the front lines of defense.<\/p>\n<p>One fact that sometimes receives less attention is that women present differently with heart attacks than what is considered the typical \u201celephant standing on my chest\u201d description; additionally, women may experience several warning signs of heart disease that may be overlooked, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Pain in one or both arms<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms of heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Sweating<\/li>\n<li>Lightheadedness or dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Unusual fatigue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sometimes these are the only symptoms. Yes, some women will experience a heart attack without chest pain. Others experience chest pressure or tightness OR a sharp pain.<\/p>\n<p>[hancock_callout]<\/p>\n<p>One fact from the American Heart Association is that fewer women than men survive their first heart attack. In many instances, that\u2019s because these symptoms have been chalked up to stress, digestive issues or even menopause and not investigated as anything serious. By the time a woman has a full-fledged heart attack, she has heart damage from months of untreated symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>So, what to do? If you have a family history of heart disease, check in with your primary physician and chat with them about any additional risks you may have.
