And you\u2019d probably be treated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2013\/01\/19\/100-birthdays-health-centenarians\/1842161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the best birthday parties<\/a> of your life.<\/p>\n<p>How do you become a member of the 100-and-over club? Studies suggest that only around a quarter of it comes down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/genetic-factors-associated-with-increased-longevity-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to genetics<\/a>, which means that the other 75 percent is up to you. And, more to the point, your health habits.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8 Great Long-Life Habits:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Learn to love veggies (and grains and fish). <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The largest concentration of people 100 years and older is in Okinawa, Japan, where the diet consists largely of vegetables, grains, and fish. Beans\u2014including fava, black, soy, and lentils\u2014are also staples in places where people live longer, while eggs, meat, and dairy are eaten much more sparingly. And healthy can be delicious. Your body needs it, so think of it the way you would a nutrient.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Make a habit of moving. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Regular exercise is great, but the truly long-lived aren\u2019t necessarily great athletes. They\u2019re simply more likely to be found on the go. If you want to live to see your century year, try every day to get up, stay on your feet, and keep moving. Fitness experts call it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/fitness\/in-depth\/natural-movement-going-back-to-basics\/art-20267226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural movement<\/a>, and you can learn it by watching a child (or trying to keep up with one). And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/1870381\/take-two-hours-pine-forest-and-call-me-morning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spend time outside<\/a>; as animals, we\u2019re built to go off-road once in a while.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Manage stress. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your average hundred-year-old may not remember the song \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Be Happy,\u201d but they would recognize the advice. We all experience stress in life. The trick is to build a routine that helps you manage it. Go for walks, take naps, pray, meditate, or keep a gratitude journal. And keeping ties with family and friends means someone always has your back.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Floss.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It might not sound like much, but flossing regularly has been shown to prevent both heart and gum disease, and preventing the two of these can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/simple-steps-to-increase-your-life-expectancy-2223907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">add years to your life expectancy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Treat yourself. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the quest for great health, don\u2019t make yourself miserable.
