It can lead to sleep loss, high blood pressure, anxiety, even drug and alcohol abuse or gambling addiction.<\/p>\n<p>If the bottom line of your bank statement has you up late worrying about the dark clouds of debt\u2014or worse, reaching for an extra drink or two to cope\u2014take heart. We\u2019ve got a quick set of solutions that will help you get your money under control and dreaming of bright sunny skies again.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Take debt one small step at a time.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maybe bills, loan payments, and collection agencies are making it feel as if the wolf is at the door. If that\u2019s the case, get those obligations organized. Taking it debt by debt, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nolo.com\/legal-encyclopedia\/strategies-negotiating-with-creditors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact your creditors<\/a> to work out a payment plan that works for you.<\/p>\n<p>Most creditors would much rather get regular payments\u2014of any size\u2014than go through the expense and hassle of legal action. Be honest about your ability to pay and how much you can afford. Don\u2019t over-commit. Negotiate. You\u2019ll need to stick to the plan to stay on track.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Make a budget.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that budgeting is less fun than spending. But when you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mint.com\/budgeting-3\/home-budget-template-create-an-effective-household-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complete and realistic budget<\/a> in place, it helps you better understand both spending and sacrifice. There are rewards\u2014material and emotional\u2014to giving up the things you only somewhat want or need, in favor of what you really need.<\/p>\n<p>Be realistic, but not severe. You must of course budget for things like food, rent, and utilities. But if you know that you need new clothes, a night out, or even something luxurious once in a while, be honest with yourself and plan for some of those expenses. Just plan to spend less in those areas that have been problems in the past, and find ways to make those limits work.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Think outside the box.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We get so used to our lives the way they are, we can actually forget that other options exist. If you\u2019re just not bringing in enough to make your budget work, ask yourself what <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.getwela.com\/pastblogposts\/2016\/06\/06\/5-simple-lifestyle-changes-to-save-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changes you could make<\/a>\u2014even what you might happily live without. When was the last time you compared carrier rates on your cell phone plan, or your auto insurance? Could you make do with one less car? Or make your own morning coffee, rather than a run to the coffee shop?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Harness your inner accountant.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to become an expert with bookkeeping and financial instruments. Just get more comfortable being the person who says: \u201cWe don\u2019t have the funds for that,\u201d or \u201cNot right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This can be tougher than it sounds, especially if you have a kid, or partner, who isn\u2019t exactly on board with making a few lifestyle changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/learnvest\/2013\/04\/18\/the-money-talk-you-and-your-partner-cant-avoid\/#46de5f403060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Make time to explain<\/a> to family and friends that you\u2019re taking positive steps to make your life\u2014and theirs\u2014more sustainable and less stressful. Be up front about the budget, but emphasize the solution, not the problem.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Ask for help.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t go it alone. Enlist the help of partners, spouses, or other family members. Keep your close friends in the loop. And don\u2019t be afraid to lean on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ressources communautaires<\/a> for advice or assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, keep your mind on your most precious resource: your mental and physical well-being. Take care of yourself, and don\u2019t sacrifice your health or medical care for financial purposes.
