If you’ve ever stepped\non a rusty nail, you’ve probably gotten a tetanus shot to prevent a serious\ninfection. The bacteria that cause tetanus can enter the body through cuts,\npuncture wounds, burns, or animal bites<\/p>\n<\/div>

\n\n<\/div>
\n

Preteens need six\nvaccine doses to protect them from tetanus\u2014and these vaccines also protect\nagainst diphtheria and whooping cough. As an adult, you can maintain a vital vaccination\nschedule to guard against tetanus and other infections.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The effects of tetanus<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

Clostridium\ntetani<\/em>, the bacteria that cause tetanus, live in the\nsoil\u2014and produce a toxin that can lead to intense muscle cramping and spasms in\nthe jaw or abdomen, stiffness in muscles throughout the body, trouble\nbreathing, headache, fever, seizures, changes in heart rate and blood pressure,\nand even paralysis. These muscle contractions give tetanus its\nnickname\u2014lockjaw\u2014because the painful effects in the neck and jaw muscles can\nlimit the ability to open your mouth or swallow. Up to 20% of tetanus sufferers\ndie from the infection, and those who survive may need months to recover from\nits effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Vaccinating your child against tetanus<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

Your child’s pediatrician\nshould alert you to the tetanus vaccination schedule for your child, but it’s\nimportant to track\nthe inoculation schedule and understand what to do when<\/a>.\nLittle ones begin with five doses of a diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis\n(DTaP) vaccine at two, four, six, and 15-18 months old, plus a fifth dose\nbetween the ages of four to six years. Finally, they need a booster vaccine\ncalled Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) when they’re between 11 and 12\nyears old.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Adults and tetanus vaccines<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

If you’re not certain\nwhether you received tetanus vaccinations as a child, or if the vaccines weren’t\navailable when you were young, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\nrecommend a shot of Tdap for adults, with follow-up inoculations at 10-year\nintervals. Women need a Tdap shot during the first trimester of pregnancy,\nmostly for its protection against whooping cough in the first months after\ntheir babies’ births.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Other important vaccinations for adults<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

Children need a long\nlist of vaccines for problems beyond tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough\n(pertussis) at specific intervals throughout infancy and childhood. These\ninclude inoculations against Hepatitis A and B; human papillomavirus (HPV);\nmeasles, mumps, and rubella (MMR); pneumococcal pneumonia; polio; rotavirus;\nand varicella (chickenpox). Adults\nneed some of these same vaccines as well.<\/a>\nThe Menactra, or meningitis ACWY, vaccine is given to\nadolescents before 6th grade and again before their senior year of high school.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>

Meningococcal B vaccines\nare recommended for kids going off to college. Between the ages of 19 and 26,\nadults need seasonal flu shots, an HPV vaccination, and the tetanus,\ndiphtheria, pertussis vaccine. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\n

From age 27 to age 60,\nflu shots remain essential, as does the tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis vaccine,\nespecially for those who didn’t receive a shot in adolescence. At and above age\n50, you can protect yourself from shingles with a live-virus Zostavax vaccine\u2014or\nthe new shingles vaccine called Shingrix, which is a killed-virus vaccine with\ntwo shots given two to six months apart. Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccines are\ntypically given for people over age 65 and others with chronic underlying\nconditions such as COPD, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>

These aren’t all the\ninoculations you may need, and if you’re allergic to some of the vaccines, or\nhave other health conditions such as Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome, seizures or\nnervous-system problems, your\nhealthcare provider may recommend that you skip or postpone various\nvaccinations<\/a>. You may need additional shots to protect yourself\nfrom illnesses you might encounter during travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>
