{"id":52550,"date":"2025-04-25T22:03:02","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T02:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/mayo-health-library\/severe-bleeding-first-aid\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T12:06:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T17:06:17","slug":"severe-bleeding-first-aid","status":"publish","type":"mayo","link":"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/fr\/mayo-health-library\/severe-bleeding-first-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe bleeding: First aid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n<p>For severe bleeding, take these first-aid steps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Call 911 or your local emergency number if the wound is deep or you&#8217;re not sure how serious it is.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t move the injured person except if needed to avoid further injury.<\/p>\n<p>Before checking for the source of the wound, put on disposable gloves and other personal protective equipment if you have them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove any clothing or debris from the wound.<\/strong> Look for the source of the bleeding. There could be more than one injury. Remove any obvious debris but don&#8217;t try to clean the wound. Don&#8217;t remove large or deeply embedded objects, and don&#8217;t probe the wound.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Stop the bleeding.<\/strong> Cover the wound with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. Press on it firmly with the palm of your hand until bleeding stops. But don&#8217;t press on an eye injury or embedded object. Don&#8217;t press on a head wound if you suspect a skull fracture.<\/p>\n<p>Wrap the wound with a thick bandage or clean cloth and tape. Lift the wound above heart level if possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Help the injured person lie down.<\/strong> If possible, place the person on a rug or blanket to prevent loss of body heat. Elevate the feet if you notice signs of shock, such as weakness, clammy skin or a rapid pulse. Calmly reassure the injured person.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add more bandages as needed.<\/strong> If the blood seeps through the bandage, add more gauze or cloth on top of the existing bandage. Then keep pressing firmly on the area.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Tourniquets:<\/strong> A tourniquet is effective in controlling life-threatening bleeding from a limb. If needed, apply a commercially made tourniquet if it&#8217;s available and you&#8217;re trained in how to use it. Don&#8217;t use an improvised tourniquet, such as a scarf or a belt.<\/p>\n<p>When emergency help arrives, tell them how long the tourniquet has been in place.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Keep the person still.<\/strong> If you&#8217;re waiting for emergency help to arrive, try to keep the injured person from moving.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t called for emergency help, get the injured person to an emergency room as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lavez-vous les mains.<\/strong> After helping the injured person, wash your hands, even if it doesn&#8217;t look like any blood got on your hands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to administer first aid for severe bleeding.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","tags":[1686,1729,1687,1682,1684],"class_list":["post-52550","mayo","type-mayo","status-publish","hentry","tag-anatomical-structure","tag-health-category","tag-medical-procedure","tag-person-group-concept","tag-theme-of-focus","content_type-first-aid"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
