According\nto the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, last year 678,000 children\nwere found to be victims of abuse or neglect nationwide. In 2018, there were\nabout 4.3 million reports made to child protective services, involving the\nlives of 7.8 million children.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\n\n<\/div>
\n

Those\nnumbers are shocking. Even more shocking: Child abuse rates in Indiana are more than double the national average<\/a>, trailing only Kentucky in this\nshameful department.<\/p>\n<\/div>

April is\nNational Child Abuse Prevention Month. Here\u2019s how you can play a role in\nhelping to prevent child abuse and neglect.<\/p>\n<\/div>

How to report abuse or neglect<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

First\nthings first: Indiana is a mandatory reporting state. If you suspect a child\nhas been abused or neglected, you must, by state law, make a report. (If you\nwish, you can report anonymously.) Call the Indiana Child Abuse and Neglect\nHotline at 1-800-800-5556.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\n\n<\/div>

When\nmaking a report, be as complete, accurate, and specific as possible. An intake\nspecialist will ask you who was involved, what happened, when and where the\nincident happened, and other important questions to get the details. You can\nalso find your local Department of Child Services\n(DCS)<\/a>\noffice, where you can make a report and connect with services. The DCS website<\/a> has other helpful resources, as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Know the protective factors<\/h4>\n<\/div>
\n\n<\/div>
\n

The U.S.\nDepartment of Health and Human Services lists six protective factors<\/a> involved in reducing the risk of\nchild abuse and neglect. They are:<\/p>\n<\/div>
