Normally, the valves in your veins make sure that blood flows toward your heart. But when these valves don\u2019t work well, blood can also flow backward. But it can be painful and disabling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">You are more likely to have this condition if you:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Are overweight<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Are pregnant<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Have a family history of the problem<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Had damage to your leg due to injury, surgery, or previous blood clots<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">If leg swelling because of <a href=\"http:\/\/hancockregionalhospital.staywellhealthlibrary.com\/Content\/healthsheets-v1\/understanding-chronic-venous-insufficiency\/\">chronic venous insufficiency<\/a> isn\u2019t controlled, an open wound (ulcer) can form. Ulcers need frequent medical care. Special dressings may be applied. You may be given antibiotics to fight infection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Your healthcare provider may prescribe medicines, such as aspirin or pentoxifylline, to help the ulcer heal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Your healthcare provider may prescribe compression stockings to help with the swelling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Your healthcare provider may refer you to a specialist such as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/es\/healthcare-services\/center-for-wound-healing\/\">Centro de curaci\u00f3n de heridas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Elevate your legs often to reduce swelling. The ulcer needs oxygen-rich blood to heal. This blood can\u2019t reach the ulcer until the swelling is reduced.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Seek immediate medical attention if:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\">\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">You have an increase in pain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">You develop a fever of 100.4\u00b0F (38\u00b0C) or higher, or as directed by your healthcare provider.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">The area around the ulcer becomes red, tender, or both.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">The ulcer oozes discolored fluid or smells bad.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"List_Bullet\">\n<p class=\"Body_text_no_indent\">Swelling increases suddenly, or the dressing feels tight<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when your leg veins don\u2019t allow blood to flow back to your heart.
