Wean obtuvo su licenciatura en biolog\u00eda y gen\u00e9tica de la Universidad Ball State en 1985. Estudi\u00f3 en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Indiana, donde obtuvo su t\u00edtulo de m\u00e9dico en 1989. Despu\u00e9s de la escuela de medicina, la Dra. Wean complet\u00f3 su residencia en el Hospital Metodista. Fue jefa de residentes de 1991 a 1992.
