There are bound to be posts from insomniacs,\ncomplaining about the inability to get a good night\u2019s sleep. Or maybe it\u2019s you\nwho can\u2019t get even six, let alone eight, straight hours of shut eye.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>If\nyou identify with that dilemma, maybe a visit to the Hancock Sleep Disorder\nCenter is in order. There are hotel-like rooms, Sleep Number beds, and all the necessary\nequipment to monitor sleep patterns so our experts can fix whatever\u2019s keeping\nyou up at night. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>\u201cWe\nwork with a lot of different sleep problems\u2014people who can\u2019t fall asleep or\nstay asleep, people who kick their legs at night, and people who are\nexperiencing uncontrolled high blood pressure or maybe having the start of heart\nproblems,\u201d said Randy Campbell, director of Hancock\u2019s Sleep Disorder Center.\n\u201cAll of those people really need a sleep study.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Want\nto know more? Campbell answered a few questions about the center and the\nproblems its experts can treat.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How\ndo you know if you have a sleep issue?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nHaving trouble maintaining sleep is a good sign there\u2019s a problem. It\u2019s pretty normal\nfor people to get up once, maybe even twice, at night. If you\u2019re getting up\nmore than that, you\u2019re excessively thirsty during the night, or have night\nsweats, many times those are symptoms. Often, your spouse will hear snoring or\nnotice you\u2019re jerking or kicking. There are other symptoms, too, but those are\nthe main ones. Between 25 and 40 percent of the population has sleep issues.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\nsounds like there are a lot of people walking around with undiagnosed sleep\nproblems. Is that true?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nYes and, even when we diagnose them, they sometimes don\u2019t follow through with\ntreatment. It used to really bother me because I know it can lead to heart\nproblems. But what I\u2019ve found is they\u2019ll generally return when they\u2019re having a\nhard time functioning. Then we\u2019ll retest them and help them feel a lot better.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\nare some of the health consequences of poor sleep?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nEverything from exhaustion during the day to strokes, diabetes, and heart\nproblems. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why\ndo people with sleep issues kick their legs in their sleep?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nA lot of people have sleep apnea, which means their breathing is interrupted\nduring sleep. Sometimes they\u2019ll stop breathing for 15 seconds to even two to\nthree minutes. Then their body will wake them up. Many times, leg kicks are\nrelated to a respiratory event. If your body is struggling, you\u2019ll start\nkicking your leg to wake yourself up.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s\nthe best treatment for sleep apnea?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nThe CPAP machine is one of them. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway\npressure, and it\u2019s a mask the patient puts on before bed. It keeps the airway\nopen while he or she is sleeping. Most people dislike the CPAP at first but, once\nthey adjust, they won\u2019t sleep without it. They can even travel with it\u2014TSA\nknows exactly what it is\u2014and there are units that can even be used during a\nflight.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s\nthe process for getting a sleep study done?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nWe have a new center, so the accommodations are quiet and very nice\u2014like a\nfour-star hotel. We have six huge bedrooms with attached bathrooms and Sleep\nNumber beds. Patients usually show up about 8 p.m., and we play them a video explaining\nwhat we\u2019re going to do. Then they\u2019ll go to sleep at around 10 p.m. Before they\ndo, we\u2019ll hook them up to some pretty extensive equipment. Once we\u2019ve collected\nall of the data, we get them up around 5:30 a.m. and we have showers here, so\nthey can get on with their day.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\nare the concerns people express to you before getting a sleep study done?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nMost patients are anxious about it and aren\u2019t aware that they\u2019ll be sleeping in\na comfortable bed in a private room. Once they see that, they are a lot less\nanxious.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is\nthe sleep lab taking precautions because of COVID-19?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>A:\nAbsolutely. We\u2019re cleaning 24\/7, just like the rest of the hospital.
