Though hair, chin, nose, chest, and stomach are the most commonly cited body parts, <a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/related-illnesses\/other-related-conditions\/body-dysmorphic-disorder-bdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">any part of the body may become the focus<\/a>. For the person with BDD, the flaw that is minor or insignificant to everyone else becomes nearly all consuming, interfering with their life and ability to function normally.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>While only about 1 in 50 experience symptoms severe enough to be diagnosed with BDD, many more of us have had some issues with our bodies at one time or another. We may even have tried extreme diets, or looked into plastic surgery, to address them. There are many causes that may contribute to these issues. Genetics, neurochemistry, and our backgrounds and histories all may play a part. But whatever the causes, one thing is certain: We shouldn\u2019t have to live with these feelings, severe or otherwise.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Here are some ways to start seeing your body\u2014your whole body\u2014in a more positive light.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Know <em>Dein<\/em> Body the Best<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>When it comes to bodies and beauty, there\u2019s so much out there to obsess over. Supermodels, Instagram stars, reality TV queens. It\u2019s all in fun unless we start fooling ourselves about it having any basis in reality. Magazine covers are photoshopped, swimsuit models get professionally taped and tucked, and professional photographers\u2014even Instagrammers\u2014get really good at knowing the most flattering angles to highlight.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Instead of obsessing over images, get to know your own body the best. Honestly, and with love. Notice the amazing way everything works together. Remember that none of us are immune to gravity\u2014or time. Realize that being alive and having a body\u2014let alone a human body\u2014is kind of a rare deal in the universal scheme of things.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Move Your Body\u2014Just for the Joy of It<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Having a human body isn\u2019t just about having a human shape. It\u2019s also about what your body can do: How it can twist, turn, bend, move, and stretch. How it can walk and run, jump and climb. And moving it isn\u2019t just great for your body. It\u2019s great for your mind, too. Recent research highlighting the critical connection between large leg muscle movements and neurological health make it clear. Moving around is intimately connected with our overall well-being. And<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/de\/2020\/03\/beyond-the-dreadmill-how-to-stay-active-outside-the-gym\/\"> moving around outside<\/a> is great for mind, body, and soul as well.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take the Time to Listen to Your Body<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>We have more competing for our attention than ever. More screens, more friends, more events, more life in general. So taking the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/de\/2020\/03\/listen-to-your-body-its-telling-the-story-of-you\/\">listen to your body<\/a> takes intention. Turn off your phone, your TV, your computer. Take time away from friends and family. Take off your shoes, your socks, your glasses if you wear them. Put on comfortable loose-fitting clothes. Just be with your body, breathing, and as you breathe, pay attention to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/beginners-body-scan-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\">every part of your body<\/a> in turn. You\u2019ll be surprised by what it may tell you, and how much more in tune with yourself you\u2019ll feel afterward.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eat for Your Body<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>We hear the word \u201cdiet\u201d a lot, and the word \u201cnutrition\u201d a lot less often. What\u2019s the difference? When we \u201cdiet,\u201d we tend to be focused on very specific, short-term goals: weight loss, beauty, athletic performance. We tend not to be focused on the overall picture. <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>\u201cNutrition,\u201d on the other hand, is focused on the nutrients in food and what each of them does for your body. What do your cells and organs need? What\u2019s good for your heart? What\u2019s good for your mind? <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>We know the advice you get on nutrition seems to change from year to year\u2014even month to month. It\u2019s hard to know what\u2019s best. Consider joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hancockhealth.org\/de\/wellness-education\/classes\/\">wellness class or support group <\/a>to get back to nutritional basics.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Write Down What You\u2019re Feeling\u2014Inside and Out<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>This may seem like an odd recommendation. How does writing down your feelings have anything to do with your body? <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>For one thing, it helps you keep better track of how your feelings, both physical and mental, change over time. And when you better understand your journey through time, it\u2019s easier to understand the things you may need to change to feel better.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>Say there\u2019s a conflict that\u2019s been causing you to lose sleep over the course of a week. The lost sleep has been sapping your energy, and you\u2019ve been snacking\u2014not always healthfully\u2014to keep your head up. That\u2019s three different parts of your life that are out of balance, all of them not so obviously connected. A journal can help you make those connections.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-heading core-heading\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ask for Help If You Need It<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress- core-\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"container mx-auto   wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\">\n<p>True BDD\u2014like related conditions such as depression, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and eating disorders\u2014should be treated seriously with the help of a counselor or other health professional.
