It\u2019s been two years since 60-year-old New Castle, Ind. resident Terry Lee was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin\u2019s Lymphoma. Angie, his wife of 28 years, says the\u00a0new Cancer Center<\/a>\u00a0has made \u201ca world of a difference\u201d in his treatment.<\/p>\n

When Oncology was in the basement of Hancock Regional Hospital, she had to go upstairs to make a phone call, and there wasn\u2019t a lot of privacy. \u201cNow we have WI-FI, Terry can be on the iPad while getting treatment, and we have a beautiful view. That sunshine makes every difference in your attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

They love the nursing staff even more. \u201cIt takes a very special person to do what those ladies do,\u201d said Terry Lee. \u201cThey\u2019re friendly, they call and check up on you, and make sure you\u2019re doing OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the nurses was at Bob Evans when she got a call from Terry in need of medication on a Sunday morning. \u201cI had my script within an hour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new facility is absolutely gorgeous. It\u2019s relaxed, refreshed and really homey,\u201d said Lee. \u201cThat\u2019s a good thing for anyone going through cancer. Anything positive helps a patient move forward, even down to the landscaping. It takes your mind off of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hospital staff worked with Lee to schedule treatment around his work days.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir staff is wonderful,\u201d he said. \u201cSherri and Linda came in with me when I first met with Dr. Schulz and took notes. It was nice to have someone explain it to you. They said if I needed to talk, I could call them, and \u2018if you don\u2019t feel right, call us.\u2019 They make you feel so welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt times, I was scared. I asked the doctor, \u2018Will I really get out of this hospital alive?\u2019 They came to me and eased the stress. Dr. Schulz has a tremendous bedside manner. They were all courteous and friendly. If you have to go through cancer, that\u2019s where you need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Debby in billing was able to find money to help cover some of Terry\u2019s out of pocket expenses. \u201cCancer is a hard thing to deal with\u2014it takes its toll,\u201d said Lee. \u201cI feel sorry for people who don\u2019t have good insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee told the story of when the nursing staff connected him with a patient who was dying and needed a home for her dog. They knew Terry and his wife had done K9 training through 4H. He was able to assure the woman that her dog would have a home when she was gone. \u201cIt was incredibly moving. It meant so much to her\u2014and to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Terry is in remission today and continues treatment at the Cancer Center.<\/p>\n

A Positive Attitude<\/h2>\n

Non-Hodgkin\u2019s Lymphoma\u00a0was discovered by a CT scan in\u00a0Hugh Grandison\u00a0and quickly advanced all over the 74-year-old\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe staff was always optimistic about what they could do,\u201d said Grandison. \u201cThey were all positive, which affected me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The basement didn\u2019t bother the\u00a0Knightstown resident, but there wasn\u2019t much privacy, he said. \u201cThe new facility is beautiful and has really raised our spirits. It was uplifting to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wife took advantage of the outdoor patio to step away from the stress when needed. \u201cI can\u2019t say enough about the nurses and my experience,\u201d he added. \u201cI couldn\u2019t ask for any better care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hugh is cancer-free today.<\/p>\n
