Almost everyone feels it during short-term illness. Fortunately, fatigue usually goes away when the illness is over.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes fatigue doesn&#8217;t go away. It doesn&#8217;t get better with rest. And the cause might be unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Fatigue reduces energy, the ability to do things and the ability to focus. Ongoing fatigue affects quality of life and state of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time fatigue can be traced to one or more lifestyle issues, such as poor sleep habits or lack of exercise. Fatigue can be caused by a medicine or linked to depression. Sometimes fatigue is a symptom of an illness that needs treatment.<\/p>\n<h3>Lifestyle factors<\/h3>\n<p>Fatigue may be related to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alcohol or drug use<\/li>\n<li>Eating poorly<\/li>\n<li>Medicines, such as ones used to treat allergies or coughs<\/li>\n<li>Not enough sleep<\/li>\n<li>Too little physical activity<\/li>\n<li>Too much physical activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Conditions<\/h3>\n<p>Exhaustion that doesn&#8217;t let up might be a sign of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adrenal insufficiency<\/li>\n<li>Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) <\/li>\n<li>An\u00e4mie  <\/li>\n<li>Anxiety disorders <\/li>\n<li>Krebs <\/li>\n<li>Myalgic encephalomyelitis\/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME\/CFS) <\/li>\n<li>Chronic infection or inflammation<\/li>\n<li>Chronic kidney disease <\/li>\n<li>COPD &mdash; a long-term lung disease that causes trouble with breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) <\/li>\n<li>Depression (major depressive disorder) <\/li>\n<li>Diabetes <\/li>\n<li>Fibromyalgie <\/li>\n<li>Grief<\/li>\n<li>Herzkrankheit <\/li>\n<li>Heart failure &mdash; a condition in which the heart doesn&#8217;t pump blood as well as it should.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis A <\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis B <\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis C <\/li>\n<li>HIV\/AIDS <\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) <\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) <\/li>\n<li>Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) <\/li>\n<li>Liver disease <\/li>\n<li>Low vitamin D<\/li>\n<li>Lupus <\/li>\n<li>Medicines and treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, pain medicines, heart medicines and antidepressants<\/li>\n<li>Mononucleosis <\/li>\n<li>Multiple Sklerose <\/li>\n<li>Fettleibigkeit <\/li>\n<li>Parkinson&#8217;s disease <\/li>\n<li>Physical or emotional abuse<\/li>\n<li>Polymyalgia rheumatica <\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Rheumatoid arthritis <\/li>\n<li>Sleep apnea &mdash; a condition in which breathing stops and starts many times during sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Stress.<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic brain injury <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Call 911 or your local emergency number<\/h3>\n<p>Get emergency help if you have fatigue and any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chest pain.<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath.<\/li>\n<li>Irregular or fast heartbeat.<\/li>\n<li>Feeling that you might pass out.<\/li>\n<li>Severe stomach, pelvic or back pain.<\/li>\n<li>Unusual bleeding, including bleeding from the rectum or vomiting blood.<\/li>\n<li>Severe headache.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Seek help for urgent mental health problems<\/h3>\n<p>Get emergency help if your fatigue is related to a mental health problem and your symptoms also include thoughts of harming yourself or of suicide. Call 911 or your local emergency services number right away. Or contact a suicide hotline. In the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline.
