Heel pain is rarely a symptom of a serious health condition, but it can get in the way of daily activities, such as walking.<\/p>\n<p>The most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis, which affects the bottom of the heel, and Achilles tendinitis, which affects the back of the heel.<\/p>\n<p>Heel pain also may be caused by other chronic conditions, injuries or some medical conditions that affect the bones and joints. Causes of heel pain include:<\/p>\n<h3>Chronic conditions that can cause heel pain<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Achilles tendinitis <\/li>\n<li>Bursitis <\/li>\n<li>Haglund&#8217;s deformity.<\/li>\n<li>Heel spur.<\/li>\n<li>Peripheral neuropathy <\/li>\n<li>Plantar fasciitis <\/li>\n<li>Plantar warts <\/li>\n<li>Retrocalcaneal bursitis.<\/li>\n<li>Tarsal tunnel syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Injuries that can cause heel pain<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Achilles tendon rupture <\/li>\n<li>Calcaneal fracture.<\/li>\n<li>Heel bruise, also called contusion.<\/li>\n<li>Stress fractures <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Medical conditions that can cause heel pain<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ankylosing spondylitis <\/li>\n<li>Bone tumor<\/li>\n<li>Osteomyelitis <\/li>\n<li>Paget&#8217;s disease of bone <\/li>\n<li>Pinched nerve <\/li>\n<li>Psoriatic arthritis <\/li>\n<li>Reactive arthritis <\/li>\n<li>Rheumatoid arthritis <\/li>\n<li>Sarcoidosis <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even mild heel pain can be bothersome, but you usually can safely try simple home remedies for a short time.<\/p>\n<h3>Seek immediate medical attention if you:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have serious heel pain right after an injury.<\/li>\n<li>Have serious pain and swelling near the heel.<\/li>\n<li>Are not able to bend the foot downward, rise on the toes or walk as usual.<\/li>\n<li>Have heel pain with fever and numbness or tingling in the heel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Schedule an office visit if:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s heel pain even when not walking or standing.<\/li>\n<li>Heel pain lasts more than a few weeks, even after you&#8217;ve tried rest, ice and other home treatments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Self-care<\/h3>\n<p>Heel pain often goes away on its own with home care. Try the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rest.<\/strong> If possible, don&#8217;t do anything that puts stress on your heels, such as running, standing for long periods or walking on hard surfaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ice.<\/strong> Place an ice pack or bag of frozen peas on your heel for 15 to 20 minutes, three times a day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New shoes.<\/strong> Be sure your shoes fit properly and give plenty of support. If you&#8217;re an athlete, choose shoes that are designed for your sport. Replace them regularly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arch supports or orthotics.<\/strong> Arch supports that you can buy without a prescription can help relieve pain. Custom-made orthotics usually aren&#8217;t needed for heel pain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pain medicines.<\/strong> Medicines you can get without a prescription can help relieve pain.
