It can be life-threatening by causing damage to the brain and other vital organs. It may be caused by doing strenuous activity in the heat or by being in a hot place for too long. Heatstroke can happen without having any previous heat-related condition, such as heat exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect heatstroke, <strong>call 911 or your local emergency number<\/strong>. Then move the person out of the heat right away.<\/p>\n<p>Heatstroke symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) or greater.<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mental status or behavior, such as confusion, agitation and slurred speech.<\/li>\n<li>Hot, dry skin or heavy sweating.<\/li>\n<li>Nausea and vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>Flushed skin.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid pulse.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n<li>Fainting.<\/li>\n<li>Seizure.<\/li>\n<li>Coma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For heatstroke, cool the person through whatever means available. For example:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Put the person in a cool tub of water or a cool shower.<\/li>\n<li>Spray the person with a garden hose.<\/li>\n<li>Sponge the person with cool water.<\/li>\n<li>Fan the person while misting with cool water.<\/li>\n<li>Place ice packs or cool, wet towels on the neck, armpits and groin.<\/li>\n<li>Cover the person with cool, damp sheets.<\/li>\n<li>If the person is conscious, offer chilled water, a sports drink containing electrolytes or another nonalcoholic beverage without caffeine.<\/li>\n<li>Begin CPR if the person loses consciousness and shows no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to recognize and provide first-aid treatment for heatstroke.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","tags":[1729,1687,1682,1684],"class_list":["post-52547","mayo","type-mayo","status-publish","hentry","tag-health-category","tag-medical-procedure","tag-person-group-concept","tag-theme-of-focus","content_type-first-aid"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
