Some head injuries need emergency care while others can be seen by a healthcare professional during a scheduled visit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call 911 or your local emergency number<\/strong> if someone has had a serious head injury &mdash; such as a fall from a ladder or a motor vehicle accident &mdash; or if the person has the following symptoms. With potentially serious head injuries, it is important to protect the person&#8217;s neck and spine. Do this by having the person lie still. Don&#8217;t move the person until emergency medical help has arrived and made an evaluation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adults<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Serious head or facial bleeding.<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding or fluid leakage from the nose or ears.<\/li>\n<li>Change in consciousness for longer than a few seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Not breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Confusion, agitation or restlessness that continues to get worse.<\/li>\n<li>Loss of balance.<\/li>\n<li>Weakness or not being able to use an arm or leg.<\/li>\n<li>One pupil bigger than the other. The pupil is the black part of the eye.<\/li>\n<li>Slurred speech.<\/li>\n<li>Seizures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Children<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any of the symptoms for adults.<\/li>\n<li>Persistent crying.<\/li>\n<li>Refusal to eat.<\/li>\n<li>Bulging in the soft spot on the front of the head in infants.<\/li>\n<li>Repeated vomiting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Follow these first-aid steps while waiting for emergency medical help to arrive:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keep the person still.<\/strong> The injured person should lie down with the head and shoulders slightly elevated. Don&#8217;t move the person unless necessary. Avoid moving the person&#8217;s neck. If the person is wearing a helmet, don&#8217;t remove it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stop any bleeding.<\/strong> Apply firm pressure to the wound with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. But don&#8217;t apply direct pressure to the wound if you suspect a skull fracture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch for changes in breathing and alertness.<\/strong> If the person shows no signs of circulation &mdash; no breathing, coughing or movement &mdash; begin CPR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Someone with head trauma can be driven to the emergency department if the person can walk and is alert but has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black-and-blue marks below the eyes or behind the ears.<\/li>\n<li>Confusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Head trauma that results in concussion symptoms needs to be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Concussion symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>Ringing in the ears.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble with balance or staying steady.<\/li>\n<li>Headaches.<\/li>\n<li>Blurry vision.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble concentrating.<\/li>\n<li>Memory loss around the event that caused the head trauma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to administer first aid for head trauma.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","tags":[1686,1729,1687,1682,1684],"class_list":["post-52534","mayo","type-mayo","status-publish","hentry","tag-anatomical-structure","tag-health-category","tag-medical-procedure","tag-person-group-concept","tag-theme-of-focus","content_type-first-aid"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
