Shock may result from trauma, heatstroke, blood loss or an allergic reaction. It also may result from severe infection, poisoning, severe burns or other causes.<\/p>\n<p>Shock keeps organs from getting enough blood or oxygen. If shock is not treated, it can lead to permanent organ damage or even death.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect a person is in shock, <strong>call 911 or your local emergency number.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of shock vary depending on circumstances and may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cool, clammy skin.<\/li>\n<li>Pale or ashen skin.<\/li>\n<li>A gray or bluish tinge to lips or fingernails.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid pulse.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>Enlarged pupils.<\/li>\n<li>Weakness or fatigue.<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or fainting.<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mental status or behavior, such as anxiousness or agitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After calling 911 or your local emergency number, take the following steps right away:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lay the person down and elevate the legs and feet slightly, unless you think this may cause pain or further injury.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the person still.<\/li>\n<li>Begin CPR if the person shows no signs of life, such as not breathing, coughing or moving.<\/li>\n<li>Loosen tight clothing and, if needed, cover the person with a blanket to prevent chilling.<\/li>\n<li>If the person vomits or is bleeding from the mouth, and no spinal injury is suspected, turn the person onto a side to prevent choking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t let the person eat or drink anything.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t move the person unless it&#8217;s needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to recognize, get help for and provide first aid for shock.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","tags":[1729,1687,1682,1684],"class_list":["post-52531","mayo","type-mayo","status-publish","hentry","tag-health-category","tag-medical-procedure","tag-person-group-concept","tag-theme-of-focus","content_type-first-aid"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
