When we’re struggling with our mental health, distracting yourself may feel like a good solution. If we just keep ourselves busy, complete tasks, or keep our routine, we’ll eventually start to feel better, right? While that might sound like a good idea in theory, sometimes our bodies and minds are trying to send us a different message—and it’s to just slow down.
Why Am I Feeling This Way?
Struggling with your mental health is normal—all of us may feel anxious, stressed, or depressed, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. However, discovering what it is that’s bothering you and addressing it is vital to maintaining a healthy equilibrium both physically and mentally. And sure, you may want to keep your routines as normal—or feel like you can’t disrupt them without having consequences by missing work or family obligations. But sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves is just rest.
Life is busy, and filled with noise. Between our jobs, our families, and taking care of ourselves, our homes, and our lives in general, it can be so easy to forget to give yourself the same attention you give everything else. When you’re battling stress, anxiety, or depression, don’t try to just push through it—take time to assess yourself. More often than not, you’ll find that what you actually need is to slow down and give yourself a little extra time and kindness.
But if you’re struggling with more than just needing a mental health day, or even if you feel like your problems are minimal and don’t need the attention of a professional, Hancock Health counselors are here to help. No issue is too big or too small, and you deserve to have your feelings, whatever they may be, heard and respected.
